Texas County Courthouse Project #3: Bastrop County (Bastrop, Texas)

One of the original twenty-three counties after Texas became a Republic in 1836, Bastrop County and the city of Bastrop (about thirty miles southeast of Austin) are both named in honor of the self titled Baron de Bastrop, whose actual name was Felipe Enrique Neri. The Baron came to Texas to escape charges of embezzlement in the Netherlands and became the commissioner of colonization for the Mexican government in Texas, having the authority to issue land titles for the famous Anglo-American colonies of Stephen F. Austin. It is thought that Austin himself named the town where the El Camino Real crossed the Colorado River after Bastrop (although it was changed to Mina before being reverted back to Bastrop in 1837).

The courthouse was built in 1883 making it one of the oldest in Texas. The original appearance was changed, however, in 1923 with the plastering over of the brick façade, the addition of larger columns and a reduction in size of the clock tower.
